Albert Romo

Principal/Founder

For over 22 years Mr. Romo has been assisting business owners and finance executives for companies of all sizes in identifying and securing federal and state tax benefits. Under Mr. Romo’s leadership, ROMO has identified and secured several hundred million dollars of tax incentives for its clients.

Prior to founding ROMO, Mr. Romo provided tax incentive and accounting services with the national accounting and tax firms of Price Waterhouse LLP and KPMG LLP. In addition, he also worked as a Multistate Field Auditor with the California Franchise Tax Board, specializing in tax incentives, nexus issues, and unitary filings.

Mr. Romo graduated from CSU Sacramento with a BS in Accounting. Prior to his tax career, Mr. Romo lived and worked in the Sonoma County wine country, and has a technical background in agriculture and wine making.

Brian Negri, CPA

Principal/Director, Research & Development Tax Credits

Principal, and Director of ROMO’s Research & Development Tax Credit Services practice, Mr. Negri has nearly 30 years of tax and accounting experience and is a licensed CPA in California. His primary focus is working with clients to maximize federal and state Research & Development Tax Credits by designing a well-planned study. As a former Internal Revenue Service agent, Mr. Negri also leads ROMO’s tax controversy team and has maintained an impressive record of audit wins and no changes. Mr. Negri’s R&D expertise spans multiple industries, including manufacturing, food and beverage processing, agriculture, software development, alternative/renewable energy, oil and gas refining, and gas and electric.

Prior to joining ROMO, Mr. Negri managed federal and state tax credit projects at KPMG LLP within the State and Local Tax (SALT) group. He also provided tax and accounting services at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he spent most of his time in the Tax Projects Delivery Group (TPDG) focusing on large R&D Tax Credit projects for Fortune 500 companies. Prior to working at Big 4 accounting firms, Mr. Negri spent several years working as a Revenue Agent for the Internal Revenue Service.

Mr. Negri is a graduate of University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned a B.S. in Business Economics with a concentration in Accounting.

Eric Herrera

Manager, Research & Development Tax Credits

Mr. Herrera has provided federal and state hiring and research tax credit studies to hundreds of companies since joining ROMO in 2008. As a manager in ROMO’s R&D practice, Mr. Herrera applies his significant experience helping companies identify, maximize, document, and support tax credit claims to save them millions of dollars each year. He works with taxpayers in a broad range of industries including, agriculture manufacturing, viticulture, software, food processing, and construction. Mr. Herrera received his B.A. from University of California Davis and is fluent in both Spanish and English.

Prior to joining ROMO, Mr. Herrera had the unique opportunity to work as a Principal Agricultural Technician at the UC Davis Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility, both during his undergraduate studies and as a career employee for two years. During that time he gained invaluable skills with agricultural research, farming practices, and laboratory analytics. These hands-on R&D experiences give him specialized insight into identifying qualified research expenditures applicable to the Ag industry.

When Eric is not working on tax credits, he can most likely be found at his children’s ballet or baseball practices.

Matthew Berry

Director, Work Opportunity Tax Credits

Mr. Berry is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, and for over a decade has been ROMO’s resident expert on the Federal Work Opportunity Tax Credit. He has generated millions of dollars in Federal income tax credits for his clients, which span a wide array of industries, including manufacturing, agricultural, and food service. An integral component of Mr. Berry’s success has been forging strong relationships not only with his clients but also with Work Opportunity Tax Credit Centers around the country.

Mr. Berry is also a senior associate in ROMO’s Research & Development Tax Credit Services practice, where he works hand-in-hand with his colleagues and clients to identify and maximize R&D tax credits for companies in multiple industries.

Nic Atkinson

Senior Associate, Research & Development Tax Credits

Mr. Atkinson is a Senior Associate in ROMO’s Research & Development Tax Credit Services practice and has been with the company since 2018. He works on studies for clients in multiple industries, including manufacturing, construction, food and beverage processing, and agriculture.

Mr. Atkinson graduated magna cum laude from Metropolitan State University of Denver, where he earned a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Sociology. He also played for and co-captained the University’s tennis team, which facilitated the development of his leadership, communication and time management skills.

Graham Honig

Manager, Business Development

Since joining ROMO, Mr. Honig has been essential in growing our client base and ensuring our relationships with existing clients remain strong. He has served businesses in many industries and has continually worked with CPA firms to expand their offerings to their clients. Mr. Honig previously worked at one of the most successful wealth management firms in the Silicon Valley and graduated from Santa Clara University with a degree in Finance. Mr. Honig is a Sacramento native and remains active in the Jesuit High School Community. He enjoys discussing economics, biology, and investments, and alongside his career, Mr. Honig has carried out extensive research on regenerative farming techniques, blockchain technologies, and nutritional science. During the cold months, you can find him cheering on his Kansas City Chiefs, and the remainder of the year you will find him on the golf course.
